Disinformation

I learned many new things throughout the EOTO presentations. What really stood out to me was disinformation. It is so important for everyone to be on the lookout for it. Disinformation is known as black propaganda.

Disinformation is intended to decieve people. It purposely intended to mislead people. The government is guilty of contributing to disinformation. They want you to believe what they want, not what the truth is.

Many people are becoming aware of disinformation. There are now billionaires that are building a firm to combat disinformation. Billionaires such as Reid Hoffman, George Soros, and others are the founders of this firm. This firm is called ACRONYM. Many known companies are investing in this firm since they want disinformation to be demised. Even the CEO of Linkedin is backing this company.

It is a great thing to make people aware of disinformation since a lot of people believe whatever they see on the internet. People read the headlines and automatically think they are true then spread them to their friends. This is a never-ending cycle that affects many people.

Disinformation has happened many times and has misled all of us at least once. A lot of disinformation happens during elections. The electives spread ads that may be false in order to put their opponents down. This happened in the past presidential election.

Fun fact: “Stanford University student who found that most students can’t distinguish between sponsored content and news stories and comes amid several current and former attempts to improve media literacy in at least 24 states.”

“In order to maintain an open, democratic system, it is important that government, business, and consumers work together to solve these problems.”

Disinformation will only get worse if no one is aware of it and if no one takes action.

Overall, we need to distinguish between reliable sources and unreliable sources that contain disinformation. We can use methods such as CRAAP (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose). By using this method, it will help us find more reliable sources and not make us believe everything we see.
